DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BELGIAN WAFFLES AND REGULAR AMERICAN WAFFLES

This is the most noticeable difference between the two. Belgian ones are larger and much thicker compared to regular or American style waffles. Belgian waffles have deep grid patterns and are lighter in batter, resulting in a fluffier waffles. These deep grids make Belgian waffles ideal dessert waffles since they can hold large amounts of chocolate syrup, maple syrup, honey, whipped cream, ice cream, or whatever else you desire.

I always preferred Belgian waffles, because of those large pockets, my syrup always stayed well or get easily sucked in like a sponge in the waffle.

TOPPINGS FOR BELGIAN WAFFLES

I love maple syrup, as always! As we live in Eastern Canada, yes obviously we are pouring maple syrup literally everywhere. But you can also add different sorts of syrups and sauces, like strawberry sauce, caramel or chocolate sauce. You may also use different spreads like Nutella, peanut butter. Top your waffles with fresh fruits and whipped cream, that makes all the difference. This is why Belgian waffles are served also as a dessert, not only as a breakfast.

STOCK UP ON BELGIAN WAFFLES

Belgian waffles can be made in advance and freeze until you are ready to use them. Store them in large freezer bag or airtight plastic container and keep until 3 months in the freezer.

No need to defrost Belgian waffles, just pop them in the oven rack at 250F and heat them for about 10-15 minutes. Keep an eye on them, oven’s temperature may vary.

WHAT WAFFLER MAKER TO USE

I have two types of waffle irons at home. One is in square shape and the other one is simple round shape, which will divide one large waffle in 4 smaller pieces.

Square shape waffles are very popular as it’s size is slightly smaller, then it’s sister round shape. It is up to you, which shape you like more to use for your waffles. I love to fill my square shape waffle iron only up to 80%, so small rounder waffles comes out of it. What you see on the pictures is made out of square waffle iron, like this one.

I also have a larger round shaped waffle iron, which I got for my kitchen testing and it makes fairly nice waffles. You can see image  below.
