I have been first introduced to cold brew coffee 3 years ago, through coffee chain Starbucks. At that time, they have introduced their NITRO cold brew coffee infused with nitrogen and put them on sale back in 2015. I have fallen in love with this cold brew coffee beverage. Because honestly, who wants to drink such a sugary coffee (probably) made from the other day, from Tim Horton or McDonald’s (which in my opinion, if we talk about hot coffee, McDonald do have the best quality coffee from all coffee chains available in Canada), but it is still not cold brew š

Cold brew doesn’t have to be expensive when made at home
I think you got the fact, that I like to enjoy good quality cup of cold brew coffee. So after many years enjoying my coffee through expensive chain Starbucks (and yes they are way to expensive!!!) I have discovered this cool little KitchenAidĀ® Cold Brew Coffee maker. And I will share my real experience with this little but quite helpful coffee tool.
DESIGN – Modern, sleek, stainless steel (some parts), glass body (for switching in between tea, margarita, lemonade and coffee, could leave some scent residue, but because of the glass body, you don’t have this problem. Your tea won’t have an aftertaste of coffee). As well as the small and convenient appliance, which fits perfectly in refrigerator. Hight 6.5″x width & depth 7″.
ECONOMY – The cost of the KitchenAid cold brew maker can vary from $99.00 -$149.00 depending on shops and specials. But you need to think, that every visit at Starbucks medium coffee cost you $5.00 so only in 20 days your coffee brew maker is not only paid off, but from the 21st day owning this great coffee maker, you are enjoying your cold brew coffee for less then $0.05 (five cents) a day, unbelievable right?
VERSATILITY – KitchenAidĀ® cold coffee brew maker is not only for making coffee. This little (so I call) KitchenAidĀ® bucket is so versatile, that you make cold brew tea, it is excellent for parties, you can prepare your favorite beverages, such as lemonade , for adults you can prepare margarita or Pina Colada. And most important, don’t think, that this is only seasonal maker, cold brew coffee concentrate can be simply used with hot water, which will makes your cold winter days more cheerful.

Coffee beans
What coffee beans are best for cold brew ? The choice of beans is really yours, for rich and smooth taste I recommend to use medium to dark roast coffee beans. I prefer Columbian dark roast coffee beans and using 1:5 ratio of ground coffee beans to water, is in my opinion the best. This makes about 4 cups of strong cold brew, that will be additionally diluted while mixing with ice and/or milk.
I usually buy and grind my coffee beans in coffee shop, but if you have your own grinder use French press setting.
How long to steep coffee beans in cold brew coffee maker
This is preferential question. Most recipes recommend around 12-24 hours of steeping in the refrigerator. I prefer the sweet spot 16-17 hours max, which results in perfectly smooth and nutty flavored cold coffee brew. When I left it little longer, the coffee was a bit bitter.

How to prepare cold brew in Kitchenaid Cold brew coffee maker
To make about 1 liter of cold brew coffee you will need 250 grams of coarse ground coffee beans. Coarse ground coffee is perfect, so it won’t leak any beans through the steeper.
First prepare the coffee maker by rinsing all parts and assemble the steeper inside the glass jar. Pour over course ground coffee, and add first 4 cups of filtered water over the steeper.
Allow that to bloom for a minute or two. Then add another 1 cup of water, making sure that all the coffee grounds are nicely soaked.
Allow this mixture to steep in the Cold Brew Coffee Maker in your refrigerator for 12-24 hours (for me 16 hours was perfect). Then remove the steeper, allow it to drain well from both sides (as the instructions says) and cover with the lid.
The coffee concentrate is now ready to be used. It is a concentrated coffee, so you need to dilute it. The best way to enjoy your cold brew coffee is to dilute with a 1:3 ratio of water or milk over ice. I personally prefer it 1 part of cold brew coffee concentrate, 2 parts of water and 1 part of coffee cream 15% , all this over the ice.

Long island lime with cold brew
As a second cold brew recipe ingredient is lime, to recreate bubbly and citrus coffee drink such as Long Island ( no alcohol in this recipe), I opt for sparkling lime water and lime itself. I am using juice from 1 lime or more to add a sour kick. If you need to sweeten, use simple syrup (1 part of sugar and 1 part of water, simmer 1 minute and cool, then use as desired into your favorite beverages).
Ingredients for Long island lime brew
- 1 part of cold brew coffee (concentrate)
- 3 parts of sparkling lime water or sprite for sweetness
- 1 cup of ice cubes
- Pour ice in tall glass. Add concentrated cold brew coffee, lime juice and pour over sparkling lime water or sprite.
- Garnish with lime wedges or peeled zest.

Lavender Frappuccino with cold brew
As a third cold brew recipe ingredient is lavender. I love it’s relaxing purposes, but in this case it’s a breeze to a great kick of concentrated cold brew. The beautiful scent will definitely relax you and refresh you at the same time. In this recipe I make as well simple syrup with addition of dry lavender buds (see below), but you can simply opt for lavender liqueur (with alcohol), which is great too, if you don’t have to head to work the same morning. And here is the LAVENDER FRAPPUCCINO.

Ingredients for Lavender Frappuccino
- 1 part of cold brew coffee (concentrate)
- 2 parts of water
- 1 part of cream or milk (froth)
- 1 tsp lavender simple syrup
- 1 cup of ice cubes
- First prepare lavender simple syrup by mixing 1 cup sugar and 1 cup of water and 1/2 tsp of lavender buds. Simmer over medium heat, until sugar dissolves, cool and use only 1 tsp of this lavender syrup in this recipe.
- In a tall glass, pour the cold brew coffee concentrate over cup of ice cubes, add 1 tsp of lavender simple syrup, mix well and top with froth cream of milk.
- Garnish with lavender buds or fresh lavender flowers.
