Ingredients needed for creamy macaroni and cheese
All-purpose flour and butter, makes the creamy base for macaroni.
Macaroni pasta, the classic pasta, can’t be missing.
Salt and pepper, for the taste.
Warm milk, to make the consistency creamy and thin.
Mixed cheeses, Mozzarella, Cheddar, Romano, Parmesan will bring macaroni and cheese to the next level.
Ground Paprika, add a bit of flavor and coloring in the sauce.
Bacon, is everything, so generously use bacon, it will make this mac and cheese even better.
Onion, is great for the base of macaroni and cheese, it will bring more flavor and texture.
Green peas or any another green veggies to pop some veggies in the macaroni and cheese.
How to make creamy macaroni and cheese
- Cook macaroni in a large pot according to package directions. 4 liters of water. Meanwhile, in a large saucepan, cook the bacon, chop the onion and add it to the bacon.
- Remove excess fat from bacon and add butter over medium heat. Stir in flour, salt and pepper until smooth; gradually whisk in warm milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly; cook and stir 1-2 minutes longer, or until thickened.
- Stir in cheese until melted. Drain macaroni; add to cheese sauce and stir to coat. Add 2 cups of green peas and let simmer for 2-3 min. If desired, sprinkle with paprika.
How to store and reheat macaroni and cheese
Refrigerate the leftovers of macaroni and cheese in an airtight container. Cooked macaroni and cheese will last for 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator. To reheat one portion of mac and cheese, simply pop the microwavable plate with mac and cheese into the microwave and reheat on full power for 1-2 minutes.
You can also reheat mac and cheese on stove top. Place the saucepan on stove top, pour in stored mac and cheese. Add 1/2 cup of milk to the saucepan and reheat on medium-high heat, stirring constantly to make sure not to burn the bottom of the saucepan.
