How to make baked Oreo donuts
Oreo donuts have been on my mind since forever! And because my kids would not stop begging me to make some donuts, I have finally got to the point where I bought the boxes of Oreo cookies a.k.a. Oreo overload in our house. And I was ready to create this healthier version of Oreo donuts recipe. By healthier version, I mean these are baked, not fried.
If you love chocolate donuts, then this is totally a donut for you. It is incredibly rich chocolatey and moist donut covered in smooth sweet cream cheese vanilla frosting and topped with crushed OREO cookies. It is super easy to make and fun activity for kids to dip the chocolate donuts in the frosting and crushed Oreos. That’s what my kids really enjoyed doing.
How to achieve the best result when baking donuts
Before we will start baking, I have a few helpful tips and tricks I want to share with you. I have gone through this, and it always pays out, when all my ingredients are in room temperature. It’s easier to work with eggs when in room temperature, same with butter, milk, etc. So remember, get the ingredients out from the refrigerator before you will start baking.
Also, well measured ingredients and placed in bowls ready to be mixed will shorten significantly the working time in the kitchen. Yes it might require more kitchen bowls, but you rather have your milk reheated or butter melted to be ready to incorporate these ingredients into the batter. Trust me, I know what I am talking about. It saves a time and mistakes made while baking.
MAIN TIPS on succeeding the best Oreo donuts
WHAT DONUT PAN/TIN TO USE
Best is to invest in DONUT pan/tin. Solid metal non-stick pan/tin with 12 cavities is the best purchase. Silicone grade donut pans are not very practical. They are difficult to transport when filled with batter. You have to always keep a baking sheet underneath the silicon pan.
DO NOT OVERFILL THE DONUT PAN
Even if you might have some leftover of the batter, do NOT overfill the pan. This recipe is written for 12 donut pan/tin cavities. The model of the donut tin you already own, might have a slightly different size than mine. You might end up with extra batter.
It happened to me once, and I couldn’t even find the donut holes. They looked more like cupcakes. No panic if it happens, I still found out the way how to make them look like a donut. It will take a little extra step, if accidentally you overfill the pan.
Simply take out the donuts from the donut pan and place them on the cutting board or any clean surface. Use the Wilton tip for filling cupcakes. The larger size is usually the same size of the donut hole. Place the tip in the middle of the donut and press down to cut out the small hole. And there you have your donut back.
CRUSH THE OREO COOKIES
Prepare the crushed Oreos in advance. You can either place them in the food processor and pulse a few times, until it’s crushed, but not powdery crushed. You still want to recognize the Oreo cookies on the donuts.
Or you can use Ziploc and wooden hammer to crush the Oreo cookies. Place the Oreos in Ziploc, tighten it and place it on a wooden board or on a kitchen towel. Slam the wooden hammer until the Oreo cookies are crushed.
SIFT THE COCOA POWDER AND FLOUR
Very important to sift the cocoa powder and all-purpose flour. If you don’t want to have a lump of flour and cocoa powder in your batter. Smooth batter will rise perfectly and will assure evenly baked donut. Sift together the cocoa powder and flour before incorporation into the batter.
PIPING BAG FOR PIPING THE BATTER
This is really just a tip for having your donut pan nice and clean. I know, it might sound a bit extra thing to do, but nobody wants to have a messy pan with burned slops of batter all over it. Spare your pan and your time washing it later. You can totally use also the ice cream scoop to divide the batter into the donut pan.
