Christmas apple pie is an iconic festive dessert, that can be baked on any occasion, but for Christmas it’s baked with extra special ingredients. Buttery crust filled with juicy apples and topped with roasted crushed hazelnuts.

Apple pie is an iconic dessert. There are plenty of varieties made from apple purées, sliced apples, cubed apples, shredded apples. All of them are delicious and preference of your taste buds. Today, I will share with you, how I prepare apple pie for Christmas.
It is a special edition for Christmas, so I will be using the top quality ingredients to achieve the best possible buttery pie crust. And the juiciest apples. I will also use three secret ingredients to highlight the Christmas season.

Ingredients for apple pie
All-purpose flour
Butter
Cold water
Brown sugar
Hazelnuts
Spices
Apples
Maple syrup
Dark spiced rum

Secret ingredients
There are three secret ingredients that are used in this recipe. Roasted hazelnuts, maple syrup and Czech dark spiced rum. My grandmother used to use dark spiced rum to almost all Christmas cookies. And because Czech dark spiced Rum has its own special caramelized aroma, it makes all the cookies, creams, pies more delicious and festive.

How to make apple pie
Pie dough
- Sift the flour, sugar, cinnamon and salt and mix together in a large bowl.
- Add cold butter and work in together with your hands. Work quickly, we don’t warm up too much the dough.
- Slowly add cold water and continue working the dough with your hands, until the dough in not sticky.
- Cover the dough with plastic cover and let stand in the refrigerator for at least half an hour.
- Prepare the pan by buttering the inside.
- Preheat the oven to 177 C / 375 F, middle rack.
- Roll out the dough on a floured work surface or between two sheets of parchment paper in a 3 to 4-mm (1/8-inch) thick sheet.
- With the help of a roller, move the dough onto the pie pan and press gently, so it fills all the corners. Cut off the leftovers with scissors or knife. Place it in the refrigerator until filling is ready.
- With the rest of the dough, you can create nice decoration of the pie. For example, I used Christmas motives, stars and mistletoe leaves.
Apple filling
- Mix together melted butter, maple syrup, vanilla extract and rum. Let cool.
- Prepare apples; Cut in half, remove seeds and cut in very thin slices.
- Start to place the apple slices on top of each other, creating a round stair pattern.
- Once you cover the whole pie, mix cinnamon, lemon zest and hazelnuts and sprinkle over the apples, as well as add the mix made from butter, maple syrup and vanilla extract.
- Brush off with 1 egg and bake in the oven for 45 minutes.
- Let the pie cool completely and serve with your favourite ice cream.

- 50 g roasted hazelnuts
